THEME-LASSON LEARNED
The main theme of the book is that speaking up can make a difference in the world. Malala hopes that letting the world know what is happening in her homeland could bring positive change. “If people were silent, nothing would change.” (I am Malala; Chapter 11, page 140). Though she knew that it was dangerous to speak against the Taliban, she starts giving interviews to draw international attention to her cause. “The more interviews I gave, the stronger I felt and the more support we received.” (I am Malala; Chapter 11, page 141).
Malala was convinced that truth always prevails, “If one man…can destroy everything, why can’t one girl change it?” (I am Malala; Chapter 11, page 142). The lesson that Malala learns is that if your cause is just, you should never give up fighting for it. “If I am speaking for my rights, for the rights of girls, I am not doing anything wrong.” (I am Malala; Chapter 11, page 141). She realizes that those who oppose education are afraid of the power of the pen. “I want to learn and be well trained with the weapon of knowledge.” (I am Malala; Epilogue, page 311).
The lesson learnt by Malala applies to everyone who wants a positive change in his or her society. Everyone has the ability to bring change and empower themselves in fighting against injustice. The story of Malala can inspire other girls to raise their voices and unleash the power that exists within them. This will help them realize their true potential and enable them to change their lives and the society they live in.
Malala’s fame has served to draw attention to the problems women and children face in Pakistan's male-dominated culture. According to Kashmala Tariq, a former member of Pakistan’s National Assembly and a frequent critic of the government’s policies toward women, “Malala has been able to tell the world what is happening to Pakistan and how we are suffering. It has brought the eyes of the world to Pakistan.”
Malala has dedicated her book, I am Malala, “To all the girls who have faced injustice and been silenced. Together we will be heard.”
