ABOUT THE BOOK
I am Malala is the biography of Malala Yousafzai. It is about a girl who refused to be silenced. She was not able to answer the question posed by the Taliban gunman, just before he shot her on October 9th, 2012:
“Who is Malala?” he had demanded.
However, Malala has been answering that question since that day. She inspires other girls to stand up for their rights and declare fearlessly:
“I AM MALALA”
I Am Malala is the true story of a family uprooted by terrorism, of the fight for girls' basic rights, and of brave parents who supported their daughter and encouraged her to dream. I am Malala will make one believe that we have to raise our voices against injustice to bring about change in the world.
Malala fought for girls’ right to education. In doing so, she became a target of Islamic fundamentalists. When she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price for opposing the Taliban. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.
Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery took her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of courage and peaceful protest when she became the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize. Since then, she has been campaigning for important global issues such as human rights, development, education, and peace in the face of renewed threats by the Taliban.
I Am Malala is skillfully co-written by Christina Lamb, a highly respected foreign correspondent. The voice of the teenage girl, Malala, living in Swat valley in Pakistan during the Taliban occupation, can be heard loud and clear throughout the book.
